This week saw two council byelections for Morecambe Town Council.

The council had just one Lib Dem councillor at the start of 2021 - now it has six!

Lib Dems gained both Heysham North and Westgate wards from Morecambe Bay Independents - meaning MBI no longer have an overall majority on the council, and the Lib Dems are the official opposition on the council with 6 seats to MBI's 11.

Heysham North ward:

MBI 84

Lab 98

Lib Dem 99

Westgate ward:

MBI 108

Lab 147

Lib Dem 396

Congratulations new Councillors Louise Stansfield and Bill Jackson!

The Town Council's 26 seats are now: MBI 11, Lib Dem 6, Lab 3, Unaligned 3, Ind 2, Renew 1.

Following the declaration, local Liberal Democrat party chair Peter Jackson said: "We are deeply thankful to the voters who put their trust in us.

"This is a huge swing away from Labour and the Morecambe Bay Independents. After five successive victories in Morecambe in the last six months it is clear that the residents are turning towards a new, different way of doing politics in which we work in partnership with the community to tackle problems which have dogged the area for many years, and people can actually begin to see the difference."
